The
colossal, prehistoric gorilla King Kong
has become a modern icon. The
image of that proud, ancient beast clinging to the top of a New York
skyscraper is a compeling metaphor for the confrontation between modern
man and nature, coupled with a fantastical update of the Beauty and
the Beast legend. Beneath the myth of Kong also lies a tender story:
the ill-fated love of Kong for Ann Darrow, his captivity and commercial
exploitation. Kong's helpless fury and tragic death are touching,
